Book publishing for attorneys who want to be the trusted expert

Last updated: November 2026

Big Impact Books helps attorneys and other professionals publish books that build their brand, grow their practice, and position them as the trusted expert.

Big Impact Books is led by Melanie Herschorn, author of Lasting Legal Impact, a book written specifically for legal professionals. Attorneys work through the same guided interview process as every client, about one hour a week, followed by publishing and promotion such as podcast placements and media coverage.

Should attorneys write a book?

Many attorneys can benefit from a book because it explains their expertise to prospective clients before the first consultation. A book answers the questions clients are anxious about, shows how you think, and gives referral sources something concrete to pass along.

Big Impact Books has written extensively for this audience, including Transform Your Legal Expertise Into a Book and Practice Growth Through Your Book. The same reasoning applies to consultants, advisors, and other professionals whose reputation is their business: a book turns hard-earned knowledge into proof of authority.

“I knew I wanted to share my story and reach more people, but with my schedule and other commitments, I felt overwhelmed and never thought I would have the time to sit down and write.”

What a book can do for a legal or professional practice

In Lasting Legal Impact, Melanie Herschorn frames a book as something that elevates your reputation, expands your reach, and leaves a meaningful mark on your profession. In practical terms, a book gives you a reason to be invited onto podcasts and into media coverage, both part of Big Impact Books promotional support. It gives prospective clients a way to get to know you before they call. And it keeps working long after launch.

Publishing also carries legal questions of its own. Our FAQ on legal and practical questions covers copyright registration, AI-generated content, and how authors reduce the risk of being sued. For the full service overview, see our book publishing services.

Common questions

Short, direct answers. Read all of them on the full book publishing FAQ.

Should attorneys write a book?
Many attorneys can benefit from a book because it explains their expertise to prospective clients before the first consultation. Melanie Herschorn wrote Lasting Legal Impact specifically for legal professionals. The book, a 2025 Best Book Awards finalist, lays out how writing a book can build your brand, grow your practice, and position you as the trusted expert.
Is Big Impact Books a good fit for first-time authors?
Yes, if you are a professional with expertise to share. Attorney Manisha P. Patel described feeling overwhelmed and unsure she would ever have time to write before the weekly interviews made it manageable. Founder Sarah Hubbard said her book The Intentional Networker would never have happened without Melanie and Big Impact Books, and called it an all-encompassing program.
How do guided book interviews work?
In a guided interview, you are asked structured questions about each chapter and answer in your own words. Big Impact Books runs these conversations weekly, about one hour at a time, and its team pieces the material together into organized chapters. Because the raw material is your spoken expertise, the finished manuscript reflects your voice, your stories, and your way of explaining things.
Do I need to copyright my book before publishing?
No. In the United States, copyright protection exists automatically once your work is written down. Registering with the US Copyright Office is optional, but registration is generally required before you can sue for infringement of a US work, and timely registration adds remedies. Many authors register around publication. Confirm the rules for your country with an attorney.
Do self-published authors get sued?
It is uncommon but possible. The usual risks are defamation, invasion of privacy, copyright infringement from using others' material without permission, and trademark issues with titles or brand names. Business authors reduce risk by getting permission for quotes and images, anonymizing client stories, and having an attorney review sensitive passages before publication.
Can I legally publish a book written by AI?
Generally yes, but with limits. The US Copyright Office has said material generated entirely by AI without human authorship is not eligible for copyright protection, and Amazon KDP asks publishers to disclose AI-generated content. An authority book also loses value if it does not sound like you. Confirm the rules that apply to your project with an attorney.
Has Big Impact Books won any awards?
Yes. Melanie Herschorn's book Lasting Legal Impact was named a Finalist in the Business: Writing/Publishing category of the 2025 Best Book Awards, presented by American Book Fest. The Big Impact Books blog also reports a win in Publishing at the 2024 Best Book Awards. Melanie has been featured in The Female CEO Magazine and on a BRAINZ Magazine cover.
